De Nikon Z 5 is een full‑frame spiegelloze camera met een 24,3 MP CMOS‑sensor (35,9 mm × 23,9 mm). De camera ondersteunt ISO‑waarden van 100 tot 51 200 (uitbreidbaar tot 102 400) en biedt een dynamisch bereik dat geschikt is voor zowel dag‑ als nachtopnames. Het autofocus‑systeem bestaat uit 273 focuspunten met hybride fase‑detectie en contrastdetectie, inclusief oog‑detectie voor mens, kat en hond. De Z 5 beschikt over een 5‑as in‑body beeldstabilisatie die tot vijf stops compensatie biedt, en een 3,2‑inch kantel‑en‑raakgevoelig LCD‑scherm met 1 040 000 dot resolutie.
